Originally from New Jersey, Marsiella is a ceramic artist creating functional pottery. Marsiella graduated from Pennsylvania State University in 2011 receiving her BFA in Ceramics with a minor in Art History. In 2012, she participated in a short summer residency program as an assistant at Watersheld Center for the Ceramics Arts in Maine. Later that fall she headed down south and enrolled at Clemson University as a post bac student, furthering her education within the ceramic field. During fall of 2012, she was lucky enough to participate in a work exchange program at the Arrowmont School of Craft in Gatlinburg, TN. In 2013, she moved to Floyd, Virginia and took on a two-year apprenticeship with potters Donna Polseno and Richard Hensley. In the fall of 2014, she received the opportunity to travel to Italy and attend to La Meridiana as a studio assistant. In the summer of 2015, she moved to Philadelphia, PA, where she currently works as a teaching artist and ceramic studio coordinator at the Main Line Art Center.

Artist Statement
Working with clay has always been my passion. It’s a material that’s been used for many generations throughout different cultures, leaving its mark in the world that we live in - especially my own. The pieces I create can be either functional or decorative, ranging from cups for coffee to flower brick centerpieces, to evolving my series into sculptural vases with more surface patterns to push my boundaries in design. My influences come from capturing eclectic objects that I’ve encountered in my travels. I’m inspired by brightly colored city murals and urban gardens from living in the city of Philadelphia, the rural landscape of wildflowers of the Blue Ridge Mountains in southwest Virginia, and the rustic facades of historical villas in Italy. I create my own silkscreen images, creating and manipulating textile pattern-like designs and then applying various layers onto the surfaces of my work throughout the ceramic process, treating each form as my own canvas.
